Thanks to Christina Alexandra for inviting me to join the My Writing Process Blog Tour.  Christina is working on a historical romance series set during Regency times. I can’t wait to pick up her first book!

What am I currently working on?

I’m editing a trio of novellas that all take place during the reunion/commencement weekend at a New England liberal arts college. The first one, Passionate History, will be released by Decadent Publishing soon. I’m also brainstorming a multi-book series that will be set in a neighborhood of Los Angeles called Echo Park (I think!).

How does my work differ from other contemporaries?

I write steamy contemporary novels and novellas, and they differ because they offer a certain level of heat without losing the essential part of what readers come to the romance genre for—an emotionally satisfying story that has a happy ending. I also try to represent the world as we live it (with a slightly more polished sheen) and show characters who come from a variety of ethnicities, backgrounds, and experiences rather than the another repeat of the billionaire playboy hero and the small town girl.

Why do I write steamy contemporaries?

I wish I could write historical novels—the different mores of the past lead to some great internal and external conflicts and fun plots, but when I write, my voice comes out incredibly contemporary. I write a combination of heat, humor, a little suspense because that’s what I find hooks me when I’m reading, and I always strive to write something I’d want to pick up and read.

How does my writing process work?

When I get an idea I usually jot it down and then maybe one out of ten ideas will get fleshed out enough in my mind that I’ll decide it will be worth investing in it. Then I’ll plot a little, do a few GMC (goal, motivation, conflict) charts, but I don’t go overboard with the plotting. I’m more of a pantser in that I like to see where the story is gong to take me, otherwise, the magic of writing kind of evaporates for me. But I have learned that outlining and knowing where you’re going with the story ultimately lead to a better product.
